Diet Buster: Carbonated Beverages. Many people don’t realize how much of a diet buster carbonated beverages can be, but the evidence is out:  fizzy drinks that you can’t get enough of are likely causing you to pack on the pounds, and preventing you from being as thin as you would like. Carbonated beverages can cause serious problems for those that want to lose weight. Why?  Many sodas contain lots and lots of sugar, and calories, that can wreak havoc on your waistline and cause you to put on pounds that you might not otherwise have to struggle with.

Diet sodas aren’t much better because they contain ingredients that can actually cause you to feel as if you’re still hungry, even though you might not be. Another issue in many carbonated beverages is the amount of sodium that many of them have.  Reducing sodium may not necessarily be essential  for your overall health, but it can cause you to retain water in some pretty unsightly places, so cutting back is a definite must for those that want to stay thin. Studies have even shown that even one carbonated beverage a day can increase the chances of kidney stones by as much as 25 percent.

For those that have had to battle kidney stones, this painful situation is often serious enough to encourage any and all dietary changes that will help you to avoid having to go through it again. If you must enjoy that carbonated beverage, here are some tips to help you enjoy wisely and avoid the weight gain and potential negative effects of drinking it:

  • Try to keep your consumption of colas and other carbonated beverages down to once a week.  Remember that even carbonated seltzer waters contain gas producing carbon dioxide, and that can cause unattractive and uncomfortable bloating.
  • Consider the calories you’re taking in while you enjoy that pop, and compensate in other areas.  Eating and mindlessly drinking carbonated sugary drinks is part of the reason that people gain weight, so pay attention to what you’re putting in your mouth.
  • Consider enjoying other beverages instead of that bubbly one.

Ice water with lemon can be refreshing, and unsweetened iced green tea contains antioxidant benefits and is refreshing, as well. When you eat a balanced diet and make sure to get enough exercise, one carbonated beverage will likely not hurt your weight loss goals too much, but cutting them out as much as possible can help you to go a long way toward cutting risks for diabetes, weight problems and other health issues, so you can live a healthier, happier life.
