Olive Oil May be Helpful for Fighting Alzheimer’s

Olive oil is probably the most important ingredient that takes part in the Mediterranean diet. Throughout the years, nutritionists have stated various things concerning the olive oil and its benefits.

These days, American researchers from the University of Louisiana found out that this particular oil that is generally used across European countries might be useful in order to help people who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. The study that was quickly developed showed that by consuming extra-virgin olive oil, the brain cells of the Alzheimer’s patients are not being damaged that fast.

By consuming this type of natural oil, the levels of amyloid beta become lower and the brain is not giving up to the disease easily. This specific study was based on close examination of nerve cells for about 14 days. The experiment was made on laboratory mice by well known scientists. The scientists were giving a dosage of oleocanthal – a substance that the olive oil contains to the laboratory mice two times per day. As they kept on giving the mice this concrete substance, the protein and enzyme level started to grow higher and was more balanced than before. As the body started to make a natural balance of the proteins and enzymes, the amyloid beta level started to decrease.

Another research that has recently been developed in the medical journal called Neurology proved that every day activities and chores like cleaning the house or cooking food can sometimes decrease your chance of getting the Alzheimer’s disease. Individuals that dislike sitting around and prefer doing things around the house or enjoy doing physical activities have a lower risk of getting Alzheimer’s.

The researchers that were working on this study have successfully proven that people that didn’t do any sort of activity throughout the day had three times bigger risk of getting Alzheimer’s in comparison to the others who were enjoyed working or doing physical activities. Consuming the Asian spice turmeric can also be very useful in order to maintain a balanced amount of oligomers in the human brain. The main ingredient in this spice is curcumin, an antioxidant that helps in many different health situations.

Apart from frequent consumption of this popular Indian spice, a great way to keep your mental and physical health stable is by doing puzzles, crosswords, games etc. Scientists developed a study in patients that are suffering from dementia and are living in nursing homes. When they were doing things like playing games, solving puzzles or some other activities that need concentration, they were actually improving their brain function by themselves without knowing they were. Mental activities should not be neglected in older age, because they decrease our chances of getting Alzheimer’s disease.
