Full Calorie Foods for a Healthy Weight? Yes, Sometimes You Should

Sometimes, enjoying full calorie food feels bad, but new research has found that there are some times when it’s better for the body to enjoy the full calorie version.  In fact, many studies are finding that, in the case of dairy, it’s better to enjoy reduced or low fat versions instead of the fat free versions that have become so popular.

Sometimes, it's better for your waistline to enjoy full calorie foods.

Sometimes, it’s better for your waistline to enjoy full calorie foods.

Not only that, but in many cases, a full calorie contains more of the essential nutrition that your body needs, so choosing the right type of calories is far more important than how many of them you’re eating.

Try these swaps to help you maintain good health, even if they do have a few more calories:

-          Crackers for walnuts.  Even the “healthy,” low calorie option of crackers contains less nutrition.  However, if you choose walnuts that are unsalted, you’re enjoying a satisfying crunch, but you’re also getting Omega-3 fatty acids, and no sodium.

-          Chicken breast for chicken leg.  Although we’ve been taught that chicken breast is the healthiest cut of the bird, the dark meat of the leg and thigh contain more zinc and iron.  And with just a few more calories than the breast, and only a little more saturated fat, you’re going to help your body to feel more satisfied and fight hunger longer.

-          Low fat sour cream for guacamole.  Yes, you’ll have to be portion conscious, but with so few benefits, sour cream is just a wasted batch of calories.  Instead, add some heart healthy, good fat guacamole to foods like fajitas and enjoy a healthier meal than if you smothered it in sour cream.

-          Jam or jelly for a healthy nut butter.  It might have more calories, but when you choose a nut butter, you’re giving your body essential good for you protein, which can help you to stave off hunger and avoid snacking.

The bottom line is that although you want to lose weight, you should consider that many of the low fat favorites that you commonly enjoy are full of fillers, sugars and chemicals that could be causing you to pack on the pounds and lack nutrition that keeps you looking healthy and gorgeous day after day.

So, put down the low calorie foods sometimes and enjoy that peanut butter that handful of walnuts and even some coconut milk ice cream for a healthy change of pace you can be happy about enjoying.
