The Problems with Dental Insurance in America

Smiling LipsThere are several kinds of insurances out there – medical, life, and supplemental. One similar kind of insurance is called dental insurance. It is a good idea to get this coverage if you anticipate having dental work in your future. Coverage with this kind of insurance can often save you thousands of dollars. As of right now the majority of Americans are without dental insurance, and this poses a very big problem.

You Can Get Dental Insurance Coverage

If dental insurance is not covered through your employer, there are ways of getting insurance. You can buy individual dental insurance, though this is not a guarantee that the company will offer you a policy – if you have many expensive claims in the past they can refuse you and usually the premiums are expensive.

Many dental insurance companies offer discount plans. For a monthly fee you can get access to an entire network of dentists who work for discounted rates. There are no guarantees that your dentist will provide these services throughout the entire term of your plan membership. Before joining one of these or similar dental insurance plans, it is important to make sure your dentist is a member. You can also talk to your dentist to see if they have any special offers or payment plans. Many dentists are willing to work with people and do not require signing up for the dental insurance discount plans.

Here are a few typical problems with dental plans:

  • A yearly maximum. This is the amount of money that any dental insurance will cover in one year. The amount changes by dental insurance company, but the yearly average is about $1000 per year usually. The yearly maximum renews at the first of every year, usually and unused benefits will not rollover.
  • Deductibles. The deductible is the amount you must pay to your dentist out of pocket before the dental insurance will cover any services. The fee varies from plan to plan and will be higher if you use an out of network dentist. The average deductible is usually about $50 per year. The deductible also starts again when your plan rolls over.
  • Premiums. If you pay your premiums on time you should utilize your benefits. If you do not need dental insurance benefits, you should at least get preventative treatments done. Regular dental cleanings will help prevent cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental problems.
  • Fee increases. Every year that you renew your dental insurance it is possible to have “fee” increases. Some dentists raise their rates due to estimations about their cost of living, materials, and equipment.  A fee increase can make your copay much higher.
  • Dental problems can worsen if you do not go to your dentist regularly. If you skip using your dental benefits your problems may grow worse until they are a very expensive treatment later. Many cavities often require root canals later.

Dental insurance is a benefit to people who can use it for its benefits. Dental insurance usually works correctly if it is from a legitimate business and actually has very few complaints. These companies do a good job of cleaning out their claims and covering procedures that should be covered. Most people’s complaints are usually that these programs do not cover enough; in that case it is important to shop around and find the best policy for your needs. Dental insurance can often cost a lot of money to initially get, but in the long run it could save you a lot of money as well.
