Opinion: How Not to Lose Weight

smoking-acneI have had to lose weight only once in my life.  I had quit smoking during a pregnancy and ballooned right up, gaining over 60 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight.  After the baby was born, I lost 8 pounds; he was an 8 lb happy little baby boy.  So here I sat stuck with all this weight.  I never had to lose weight before in my life.  To top it off, I nursed him so I couldn’t exactly starve myself on a diet.  Those 8 pounds came right back.

Being an active mom I thought that all the running around I did was enough to burn up the added weight.  But a year went by and still I carried those 60 pounds.  Being tall I could carry some extra weight and not look too fat.  But I sure could feel that weight.  When is the last time you picked up a 10 lb bag of sugar?  It’s heavy.  How much does a gallon of milk weigh?  The answer to that is 8.6 lbs.  Now I was carrying around 60 extra pounds, so I did a little experiment.  I tried lifting up 7 gallons of milk, seven gallons equals about 60 pounds.  Do you know how heavy 7 gallons of milk is?  That is what I was carrying around all day on my body.  I wanted to lose weight so much.

I knew I had to do something but I was too lazy and too busy to start an actual exercise regimen.  As time passed, I still did nothing.  Until one evening, I was out with some friends.  They were smoking so I had one, just one I told myself.  Of course to me, cigarettes are like potato chips.  You can’t have just one.   I started smoking again.  And you will not believe what happened.  The weight slowly but surely came off.

Now the last thing I want to do is advocate smoking as a viable weight loss plan.  So I did some checking and it is not the cigarettes that caused the weight loss, it was the rise in my metabolism.  Sure, smoking can raise your metabolism but there are so many healthier options that will do the same thing.  Did you know the adding hot peppers to your soup can raise your metabolism?  Tastier than smoking.   Simple changes like colorful green vegetables and high protein meats aid in boosting metabolism rates.  And of course there is exercising.  Even just a few minutes a day will fire up those boosters.  How about start by just eating breakfast?    Kick start your metabolism every morning with a good breakfast.  Get that little engine inside you just burning up those calories.
