Surprisingly, the big health problems that many men face might not have much to do with heart attacks and obesity for much of their lives.  Instead, it has to do with nutrition, strength and hormones.

A man in his 20’s

For men in their 20’s the surprising biggest health threat is his vitamin D levels.  Since they don’t naturally get enough through the foods they eat, and guys are less likely to worship the sun, their bodies don’t make enough of this essential vitamin, and that can spell trouble for the health.

Vitamin D helps to boost the immune system now, and can prevent certain types of cancer over the long term, so making sure to get enough of it is essential.  Not only does it have great benefits for how a guy feels, but it also has been shown to increase the rate at which fat is burned.  It can be found in most dairy products and fish, but for guys that aren’t fans, it’s advisable to take a daily supplement.

A man in his 30’s

Marriage, kids and lots of work and stress tend to take a toll on how fit many men in their 30’s are.  They often put on a little weight and lose some strength, and this is where disc problems begin to develop.  For guys who are in their 30’s, herniated discs are the biggest health threat.  The aging process makes the discs in the back begin to thin, and they become more susceptible to injury.

Prevent back problems by taking fish oil supplements, making sure to get enough exercise that includes core strength builders and stretching, and avoid the “weekend warrior” syndrome, which can often lead to injuries.

A man in his 40’s

By the time a guy hits 40, he often will begin to “slow down.”  He is often tired more often and isn’t usually as active as he used to be.  His cognitive strength will often suffer during this time as well, making memory and overall brain function slow down considerably.  Libido often slows down around this time too.  It’s all caused from lowering testosterone levels, which is the greatest health threat for men in their 40’s.

This is one problem that’s relatively easy to treat, and if it’s left untreated, it can lead to other problems such as depression, and long term fatigue to name a few.  Health care professionals can do a simple test to determine if low testosterone is an issue, and then begin to treat the problem.

While it might not be heart disease that is at the top of men’s biggest health threats if any of these issues are left untreated they can lead to other health problems.  So, it’s important to take the proper steps to treating and preventing these issues for a healthy life.
