If we all could have a flat belly, it probably wouldn’t be so high on the list of wants when it comes to body parts.  Unfortunately, the abs are probably one of the hardest parts of the body to target.  That’s why so few people have the nice flat belly of youth.  It might be elusive, but it is possible to get it.

Not only does it look great, but the flatter the belly, the better the “good” cholesterol levels, and that can mean a reduced risk of health problems like heart disease.  So getting rid of that extra fat around the midriff might be more of a health need and less of a vanity issue.

Studies show that getting rid of some of the extra abdominal fat that so many carry can have tremendous health benefits, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy.  However, there are some things that people can do that will make it easier to lose fat and boost overall health.

Work it out

Abdominal fat cells have been found to be more responsive to exercise than fat cells in other parts of the body.   This means that working those abs is a sure way to burn fat faster than through diet alone.  While you’re at it, don’t forget to get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise each day.  Studies have found that people who exercise at a moderate pace for at least 30 minutes a day burn belly fat more effectively than those who don’t.  You’ll have to huff and puff a bit, but the results will be worth it.

Other effective workout options include interval training and resistance training.  Interval training is short bursts of high intensity exercise, followed by a recovery period of moderate exercise.  It burns more calories than almost any workout available and delivers more results, too.

Resistance training is also a great way to get the flat belly that you want because muscles that are strong burn tons of calories, even if you’re not doing much of anything at all.  Add that to the healthy bones and great balance it helps create, and this is a great addition to almost any workout routine.

Remember your diet

Working out is essential, but it can’t do all the work.  Maintaining a healthy diet is great for overall health, but there are some things to keep in mind when it comes to maintaining a flat belly.

Take drinking for instance:  it should be done in moderation only.  Many different types of alcohol are loaded with sugar and carbohydrates, not to mention calories, which will all team up and make that belly bulge come back.

Also, eat plenty of calcium and drink green tea, as both of these help to keep people trim and fit.  Get enough vitamin D, healthy fats and whole grains so you can feel full and satisfied, and keep your belly firm.

The belly might seem like it’s one of the toughest parts of the body to slim down, but these tips, when combined with a low stress, well rested lifestyle can make getting that flat belly almost easy.  When it comes to heart health, a firm tummy is the way to go, and since it looks great too, there’s no reason not to trim it down.
